Antique & Vintage Snake Rings — Symbol of Eternal Love

Antique & Vintage Snake Rings

The snake ring is one of the most romantic and enduring motifs in jewellery. Since ancient times, the serpent has symbolised eternity, wisdom and renewal — forever shedding its skin to begin anew. But it was Queen Victoria who gave the design its modern significance: when Prince Albert proposed in 1839, he chose a snake-shaped engagement ring set with an emerald, her birthstone. The serpent came to represent everlasting love and devotion, sparking a fashion that captivated the entire Victorian age.

Our collection of antique and vintage snake rings spans the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods, featuring coiled gold bands, gem-set heads and eyes of diamond or turquoise. Each is unique, hand-crafted and rich with meaning — a jewel that winds around the finger like a secret promise.

Every ring is curated by gemmologist Zuleika Gerrish FGA DGA, authenticated, and beautifully presented in our signature Parkin & Gerrish pink-and-green box. Complimentary resizing and free worldwide DHL delivery ensure your chosen serpent arrives ready to enchant once more.

1) What does a snake ring symbolise?
Since antiquity, the serpent has symbolised eternity, wisdom and renewal — endlessly shedding its skin to begin anew. In Victorian jewellery, it also came to mean everlasting love and fidelity, making snake rings especially romantic as tokens of devotion.

2) Why did Queen Victoria wear a snake ring?
When Prince Albert proposed in 1839, he chose a snake-shaped engagement ring set with an emerald (Victoria’s birthstone). The serpent signified eternal love, and her ring sparked a fashion for snake jewellery throughout the Victorian era.

3) Can antique snake rings be resized and worn every day?
Most antique snake rings can be resized by a specialist, though care is needed with engraved coils or gem-set heads. They’re sturdy for regular wear, but treat them thoughtfully: remove during heavy work, sports or cleaning, and store separately to protect the detailing and stones.
